In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some basics on how to achieve privacy within any landscape design. There are several features or elements you might be able to use that will help your space remain private while also benefitting it in other ways, including those that are extremely affordable and require very little upkeep.

Here are a few of the other approaches you might consider taking if privacy is one of your top priorities.

Using a Shade Sail

For homes or landscapes that are not exposed by walls or fences, but rather by overlooking windows and doors from other homes, a shade sail is a common choice to increase privacy. Shade sails come in a variety of materials and fabrics, from PVC to polyester mesh. Depending on the material you select, this can make installation as simple as a few stakes or tacks into the ground where your shade sail will be installed.

Though this won’t necessarily provide an impenetrable barrier, it does help to cut back on how visible your property is to neighbors or passersby, while at the same time offering a few other landscaping benefits, including shade protection and color/pattern variety. Shade sails are popular in a few different settings, including those in cities or other crowded areas.

Utilizing Hedges

For others, the use of hedges or other tall shrubs is a great way to improve landscape privacy. Many times, this can be especially applicable to those who’ve chosen not to build a fence or wall around their property.

Hedges are relatively inexpensive and often come with several landscaping benefits, such as providing protection from the wind and adding color, texture, shape and variety to your landscape. They’re also quite easy to maintain, though they do require some simple cut-backs once a year or so.

Water Feature

While water features are often installed for a different primary purpose, they can serve a secondary role as well by offering privacy. The main area where this is true for some homeowners: Noise privacy. A water feature like a stream or waterfall will often come with a low level of pleasant sound as part of its operations — and this sound helps drown out loud neighbors, nearby vehicles or other sounds that you’re not a fan of.
